Germany Day 5

Thursday 1st August - Day 5

Today we started the day with a visit to Potsdam town hall where me met representatives from two organisations one was the European Coalition of cities against racism and the other a local initiative Potsdam Bekennt Farbe "Potsdam shows colour" we learnt about what they do in Potsdam to tackle racism and to educate young people to value diversity. We made links back to Manchester sharing with the German group our experiences and opinions around the subject.

In the afternoon we went to a place called Freiland this is where the are activities and support available for young people, it was like a mini village, we were told how the area was once empty and how a group of people came together to take of the space and use it for the benefit of the community. There was a restaurant on sight where we ate food it was really nice, fresh and affordable. Also on the sight was a club, band rehearsal space, sports hall and youth spaces, youth workers and social workers worked from here to engage with young people. We worked together with the Babelsberg group to design and paint a banner which we will take to the football match on Saturday, learning from the experience at the concentration camp and the discussions with the organisations this morning we wanted our banner to represent our stance on fascism.

In the evening we went back to the hostel where another group Millad, Suheyb and Willi cooked for us, some of the group went swimming which was great in the heat, we met some locals and talked to them, some of the group stayed back at the hostel to finish the painting of the banner and Kerry and Fabian had to go to the hospital due to reactions from mosquito bites.
It's been a great day, we are looking forward to Dragon boat racing tomorrow.

Peace
Lewis, Charlie, Chequina and Ridick
